Made for the shapes the app forces
Instagram fits a photo to 4:5, 1:1 or 9:16 and crops away whatever is left. Uncropping first means you choose what the extra space looks like instead of letting the app cut your subject. The frame grows to the target shape and the new band is filled.
"Instagram no crop" and "resize image for Instagram without cropping" are both around 5K searches a month in India — this answers them by adding space, not bars.
Questions
Does my photo get uploaded?
No. The picture is read, grown and encoded by code running in this browser tab. It is never sent to a server — there is no server to send it to. The only download that ever happens is the optional edge-painter model, which travels one way, from our model file server to you.
Will my photo still get cropped when I post it?
Not if it already matches the target shape. Uncrop to 4:5, 1:1 or 9:16 here first, and Instagram has nothing left to trim.
What's the best fill for a story?
The blurred backdrop reads most naturally behind a centred subject on 9:16. Continue-edge works where the top and bottom are plain sky or floor.
